Environmental & Civic Education

Our work in schools in Eastern Europe has helped improve teaching and environmental education, and students become better citizens through hands-on environmental projects. Many teachers in the region still rely on chalk-and-talk and rote learning in the classroom. This does little to engage students and encourage creative thought, strategic thinking and personal initiative. In a number of countries in the region school curricula are rather theoretical and teachers are not experienced in linking academic study to what’s going on around them in the community.

We have used a wide range of techniques to encourage children to take more interest in their environment. These children (right), from the school in Bestemac Village in Moldova, are enjoying cartoons doctored with important environmental messages.
